The new DJI Osmo Pocket 4 definitely belongs to the latter category. I look at it resting next to the Pocket 3, and I might be mistaken about which is which: same body, same proportions, same small rotating screen that made the series successful. Yet, if I open it up (metaphorically, of course: I'm fond enough of DJI products not to want to dismantle them with a screwdriver), inside it's a different machine.

And the first thing I notice, perhaps the most symbolic, is an absence: the microSD slot is gone.

Divorce from microSD

I understand that it might seem like a nerdy detail, but for someone like me who has spent years cursing those memory cards at the worst possible moments—a slipped finger, a lost card, an interrupted recording—DJI's choice to integrate 107 GB of internal storage It tastes like a small liberation. It's not just convenience; it's a matter of reliability. When you're recording in heavy formats, a slightly worn or cheap microSD card might just not keep up with the data flow, and at that point, you've lost the moment. With built-in memory, the manufacturer knows exactly how fast the write channel is. And you know it too.

However, there is a downside that I don't want to hide: the ability to remove the card at the end of the day and archive everything with a click is gone. In its place is a USB-C 3.2 that promises quick exports to the computer. It's a change in philosophy — from modular to integrated — that reflects well where the entire vlog camera market is heading.

I don't know if it's a revolution or a maturation. I know that, trying it, it simply feels grown more.

4K at 240fps: the muscle you don't expect

The second number that catches the eye is the one that transforms the Pocket from a creative gadget into an almost professional tool: 4K at 240fps. Twice that of the Pocket 3. This means 4K slow-motion at one-tenth of real speed without dropping resolution, and it's exactly the kind of feature that changes how you think about a video. I'm already picturing street scenes, water, fireworks, animals caught in the moment—everything that, until yesterday, was simply out of reach with a 1-inch sensor in such a small body.

The 1-inch sensor remains the beating heart of the machine, but now it reaches 4K/240p and offers up to 14 stops of dynamic range.

As a corollary, DJI declares 14 stops of dynamic range and it keeps the 10-bit D-Log, designed for those who truly want to work in post. Nothing to be overlooked, especially if your idea of a “small camera” is something that needs to fit into the same workflow as a more serious mirrorless camera.

The buttons that weren't there before

Rotating the screen reveals two new physical buttons. One is dedicated to zoom, the other is a customizable C button. Said like that, it may seem trivial, but it's one of those little details that change the ergonomics of a device held often in one hand, perhaps while you're doing something else with the other (walking, holding onto the subway pole, holding a glass - life, in short). Less touchscreen, more confident finger placement.

Behind the motorized head, a new system is housed magnetic connection with contacts for dedicated accessories. For now, there's only one gadget: an LED fill light with a diffuser, powered directly by the handle's battery. But it's the platform that interests me — because it means DJI plans to build a small ecosystem around it. We'll see if there will be dedicated filters, adapters, and microphones. In the meantime, I'm keeping an eye on the website.

Active Track 7.0 and the new little magic tricks

The subject's pursuit advances to the version Active Track 7.0, now also activatable while you're zooming up to 4x — which, trust me, is not a given. The feature that intrigues me most, however, is the mode “Registered subject priority”: The Pocket 4 can recognize a specific person and autonomously decide to prioritize focus on them, even when other faces enter the frame. It's a small step towards a camera that, rather than just following you, it recognizes you.

Then, almost in passing, DJI mentions two other things that are not at all marginal for a photographer who moonlights as a videographer – or vice versa: the Extended exposure times, useful for light trails and creative motion, and a series of film simulations directly applicable in shooting. No post-production required to achieve a coherent image tone. Practical, for those who publish quickly. Reassuring, for those who don't feel like grading.

Data sheet

Sensor

1-inch CMOS

Video resolution

Up to 4K (16:9) at 240fps

Internal memory

107 GB built-in (no microSD)

Stabilization

3-axis mechanical gimbal

Dynamic range

Up to 14 stops · D-Log 10 bit

Audio

4 channels · DJI Mic compatible

Display

2″ Rotating OLED (Vertical/Horizontal)

Autonomy

Up to 240 minutes of recording

Connectivity

Wi-Fi 6E · Bluetooth 5.3 · USB-C 3.2

Tracking

Active Track 7.0 with Subject Priority

Prices, cuts, temptations

DJI plays its best game here: three combos at three levels of temptation, already available on the official store and authorized retailers. But if you spend a few minutes with it, you realize it's a substantial upgrade disguised as an iteration. The 240fps in 4K is a real leap, the built-in memory is a statement choice, and the magnetic accessory platform opens up new territory. And then there's that less measurable thing, hard to put in a spec sheet, which is the feeling of holding a tool Finished, refined, thought by those who have seen those Pockets evolve.

If you are a content creator who makes serious vlogs, if you edit travel videos, if you find yourself filming more than you photograph, this is perhaps the first Pocket that I can define without hesitation a small system and no longer a single device.
