The Basilica of Saint Francis becomes “digital heritage”

Eight hundred years after the death of Saint Francis, the Basilica of Assisi enters a new phase of protection and enhancement thanks to the “Preserving Assisi” project. The initiative, promoted by the Sacred Convent together with High definition, aims to create a complete digital copy of the monumental complex through very high-resolution photographs, 3D surveys, and 360-degree virtual tours.

The work, which began in 2025 and is scheduled to last until October 2026, will allow for the detailed documentation of the Basilica's interior and exterior environments, including works by great medieval artists such as Giotto, Simone Martini e Pietro Lorenzetti. The first scans have already produced a virtual tour of the upper church, which can be viewed online.

The project also stems from the experience of the 1997 earthquake, when photographic documentation of the Basilica proved fundamental for its restoration. Today, new technologies allow us to take a further step: to create a precise and permanent digital archive useful for the preservation, study, and monitoring of the artworks over time.

Upon completion of the work, a public platform will be available, accessible from all over the world, designed for both scholars and general visitors, with high-definition navigable images and immersive reconstructions of the Basilica. Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi.
