The article by FOTO Cult Tell the story of the project's return I'm back, APS-C roll., a system designed to transform old film cameras into digital machines without altering their original function.
The underlying idea is simple: instead of inserting a traditional film roll, a digital module is mounted that takes up the same space as the film. This way, you can continue to use vintage camera bodies and lenses, but save photos in digital format. The first versions of the project were bulky and required external components, while the new model concentrates everything within the film compartment.
The most important new feature is the adoption of a roughly 26-megapixel Sony APS-C sensor, much larger than the sensors used in previous generations of the system. This should ensure superior image quality and a rendering closer to that of modern digital cameras.
The device integrates internal memory, a battery, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, and supports both RAW and JPEG files. Film simulations and 4K video recording are also planned. To maintain the “analog” experience, the system does not include an integrated screen for immediately reviewing images.
According to the creators, the module is compatible with many 35mm SLRs and even some underwater cameras like the Nikonos. The project was launched on Kickstarter and quickly raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, indicating strong interest from analog photography enthusiasts.
However, there are still doubts and discussions within the photography community: some users appreciate the idea of giving new life to old cameras, while others remain skeptical about the actual image quality and the reliability of the final product.
