You've captured the perfect shot, the lighting is impeccable, and the composition is exactly as you envisioned it. But when it comes time to transfer that image from screen to paper, the choice of file extension becomes crucial to keeping that magic intact.

Sending the wrong format to the print lab can result in dull colors, compression artifacts, or blurry details. Here's a definitive guide to choosing the best file extension for your photographic prints.

 

JPEG (.jpg): The Universal Standard

JPEG is the most widespread image format in the world, supported by every single photo lab, automated kiosk, or home printer.

  • The benefits: It's a “lightweight” format. If you need to print a vacation album in 10x15 cm format or a standard photo book, JPEG is the most practical and fastest choice.

  • Disadvantages: Use a lossy compression (with data loss). Every time you save a JPEG, you lose a small amount of image information to reduce the file size.

  • When to use it: For small and medium-format prints, or when the print shop exclusively accepts this format (which is very common in online consumer services). Advice: Always export JPEGs at the highest quality (100% or Level 12) to minimize the loss of detail.

2. TIFF (.tif): The King of Professional Printing

If you're aiming for the highest possible quality, TIFF is the absolute gold standard in professional photography.

    • The benefits: It's a format lossless (without data loss). It preserves 100% of the information captured by your sensor or processed in post-production. It also supports 16-bit color depth, ensuring perfect tonal gradations without the dreaded effect banding (the clear streaks in the hazy skies).

    • Disadvantages: The files are huge. A single TIFF file can weigh hundreds of megabytes, making online loading very slow.

3. RAW (.cr2, .nef, .arw, etc.): The Digital Negative

No lab prints directly from a RAW file. You must “develop” your RAW in programs like Lightroom or Capture One and then export it.

  • HEIC It's the high-efficiency format introduced by Apple for iPhones. Although it maintains excellent quality in a small space, almost no print lab natively supports it. You need to convert it to JPEG before sending it for printing.

Choosing the right extension isn't enough if you ignore these two parameters during export:

  1. Resolution (DPI): For a sharp print viewed up close (like a photo book or tabletop frame), the file should be exported at 300 DPI (Points Per Inch).

  2. Color Profile: Ensure you export the file in the color profile required by the lab. For generic labs and kiosks, sRGB is the safest choice. Professional Fine Art labs often prefer Adobe RGB, which contains a much wider color range (perfect if you print in 16-bit TIFF).
